Popular Indian television actor Rohit Chandel has been arrested on charges of regular harassment, indecency and physical abuse of a 16-year-old girl. The 29-year-old actor was arrested from his residence in Mumbai’s Dahisar area on Friday.
After preliminary interrogation, he was produced in a special POCSO court, where the judge ordered his remand in police custody. Such serious allegations have been made in the entertainment world against Rohit, a well-known face in television and web series.
According to the complaint filed with the police, the victim had a prior acquaintance with the actor. The victim was arrested for allegedly harassing the girl by calling from various unknown numbers.
When the teenager reached her residence on July 5, the actor allegedly blocked her way and abused her with vulgar language. According to the chargesheet, when the girl protested, Rohit physically assaulted her. The victim’s family filed a complaint with the Pont Nagar police station.
The Mumbai police have registered a case against the accused actor under strict provisions of the Protection of Children Act or POCSO Act. They have also been charged with harassment and willful assault under the Indian Penal Code.
Born in Maharashtra in 1995, Rohit Chandel is a familiar name on the television screen. The actor, who started his career in advertising after failing around 90 auditions, appeared in popular serials like ‘Pandya Store’, ‘Sairab’ and ‘Kashibai Bajirao Ballal’. He played important roles in serials like ‘Escape Live’ and ‘Chandragupta Maurya’.
The actor, who rose to the peak of popularity through acting, has evoked strong reactions among his colleagues and fans.
