Students protested in the national capital and various states against irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination. The Assam government has decided to withdraw all police cases filed against those involved in the protests in Assam and initiate the process of releasing those arrested.
According to an official decision, till 6 pm on July 26, 2026, five cases related to the protests were registered across Assam and a total of 13 people were arrested based on it. After reviewing the reasons for the protests and in view of the need to enhance accountability and structural reforms in the examination and higher education system, the state government decided not to take further legal action against the protesters.
Under the decision, no police authority in Assam will take adverse legal action against those who participate in protests. The government has directed to initiate the process of withdrawal of all registered cases as per law as soon as possible irrespective of the stage of legal process. The government has also clarified that based on the five registered cases, the arrest and detention will be reviewed and arrangements will be made for the **immediate** release of those arrested.
Also, the state has clarified that there are no plans to take any action against those involved in future protests. The entire matter shall be deemed concluded here and no further legal proceedings shall be taken in this regard.
The government’s move reflects its commitment to end the legal process stemming from the NET (UG) protests and comprehensive reforms to strengthen examination and higher education infrastructure and increase accountability.
