The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the Madras High Court ban on cow slaughter in Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court stayed the hearing of the petition challenging the High Court’s verdict.

The process of keeping and slaughtering livestock in Tamil Nadu is basically ‘Tamil Nadu Livestock Conservation Act, 1958‘ (Tamil Nadu Animal Protection Act, 1958) This is governed by the Act, There is no complete ban on cow slaughter like other states of the country. rather, It imposes certain terms or conditions – such as, Just unproductive, Only old or sick animals are allowed to be slaughtered subject to a certificate from a qualified veterinarian.
The Madras High Court recently heard a case and imposed a total ban on cow slaughter in Tamil Nadu on the grounds of protecting cattle and preventing cruelty. Various business organizations have taken this decision of the High Court, Butchers and social workers appealed to the Supreme Court. They argued that such restrictions deprived millions of people of their right to livelihood and food.
Realizing the importance of the case, the Supreme Court stayed the Madras High Court order. According to the court, The basic spirit of a long-standing state law cannot be changed on the basis of an emotional or specific point of view. Constitutionally, the court cleared the matter pending final resolution, Until then, the previous rules will remain in force in the state.
The Supreme Court’s decision to stay the ban by the Madras High Court proves that the Indian judiciary emphasizes pluralism and practical economy.
