Scoring a Computer Science seat at IIT Bombay is a dream come true for any JEE Advanced candidate. But for a brilliant student from Odisha and his twin brother, brotherhood is more important than personal success or establishment.‘L. A brother who with his twin gave up a chance at a prestigious institution like IIT Bombay and studied together has now caught the attention of the whole country.
In the 2026 JEE Advanced exam, Maharoof from Odisha secured 32nd rank among all India and his twin brother Masroor secured 169th rank. According to Maharuf’s rank, he was assured of admission in Computer Science department at IIT Bombay.But because of his brother Masru’s rank, it was difficult to get a seat in the same department in the same institution. Mahroof surprised everyone with an unprecedented decision. He gave up his seat at IIT Bombay and decided to study computer science at IIT Madras, so that he and his brother could continue their studies together.
Maharuf’s decision brought much joy and pride to their family. Masroor is also emotional on receiving such selfless support from his brother and says that they have always helped each other. The success of these two brothers is due to the sacrifices of their parents. Their father Dr Mansoor Ahmed Khan was in-charge of the Medical Center at IIT Bhubaneswar and their mother Dr Zeenat Begum was a gynaecologist. Even the mother gave up her government job in Kota to create a suitable environment for her children to study.
Both brothers were already very bright in their studies. Maharoof secured 44th rank in JEE Main and secured 95.2 percent marks in class 10 and 98.6 percent in class 12. Masroor secured 58th rank in JEE Main with 97.6 per cent marks in Class 10 and 94.6 per cent in Class XII. Dr. while staying in KotaैThey take 5 hours of coaching classes daily and study for about 6 hours on their own. To de-stress, they play badminton daily and limit their mobile phone usage to reading.
According to Maharuf and MasruHealthy competition between them has helped them more. They discussed and understood any difficult subject among themselves, often without the need of a teacher. Although they are children of doctors, they chose engineering because of their passion for mathematics. In future, after completing their B.Tech degree in Computer Science, they both intend to prepare for Civil Services, UPSC Exam. In today’s competitive age where everyone is just chasing their career, the story of these two twin brothers from Odisha sets a unique example.
