It is the fundamental right of every pedestrian to walk on marked footpaths as per the Constitution. Priority will be given to road vehicles.
The Supreme Court on Friday gave its verdict in a case related to the compensation of road accident victims.
A bench of Justices PS Narasimha and AS Chandurkar observed, “If there is a road, it is very important to mark footpaths for pedestrians. Even maintenance of those footpaths has to be done. This duty is enforceable by law. Citizens can seek legal recourse if they do not have the right to walk on certain footpaths.”
Recently, a five-year-old boy was killed by a truck on his way to school. There were no designated sidewalks or crossing points at the scene. The child’s father approached the Supreme Court seeking compensation.
The Supreme Court ordered to pay Tk 11 lakh 44 thousand 628 as compensation. This money should be handed over to the deceased’s father within two months.
