GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Centre and the governments of Assam and Nagaland on Thursday, June 11, aimed at facilitating the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas in areas along the inter-state border.

The agreement is scheduled to be signed at the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, and senior officials from the Centre as well as both state governments.
The MoU is expected to pave the way for hydrocarbon exploration in resource-rich border areas that have remained largely untapped for years due to the long-standing boundary dispute between Assam and Nagaland. Officials said the agreement marks a significant step towards unlocking the economic potential of the region through cooperative efforts by all stakeholders.
The initiative is aimed at creating a framework for joint development of oil and gas resources while ensuring coordination between the two neighbouring states and the Centre. It is also expected to encourage investments in the energy sector and generate economic opportunities in the region.
Government officials described the agreement as an important example of cooperative federalism, with the Centre playing a facilitating role in bringing together both states for a common development agenda. The move is also expected to contribute to India's energy security by expanding exploration activities in the Northeast.
