GUWAHATI: A Guwahati couple was detained by Bharalumukh Police on Wednesday, June 24, after a video showing them celebrating a birthday on Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu with their car parked on the bridge circulated on social media, making it the second such incident in the city within a week to come under police scrutiny.
The individuals were identified as Mumpi Mandal and her husband, Dipu Mandal.
Speaking to GPlus, a police official from Bharalumukh Police Station confirmed that the couple was being questioned and that their vehicle had also been taken into police custody.
“We are interrogating the couple at the police station. Their vehicle is also in police custody,” the official said.
The viral video showed the couple celebrating on the elevated roadway. According to information available on Mumpi Mandal’s Instagram profile, the video was recorded in early June.
The detention follows an earlier incident on the same bridge in which 14 people were detained and four vehicles were seized after videos of a birthday celebration drew public attention. Authorities later released those individuals after medical checks and routine procedures, noting that the offences were bailable. The earlier episode raised concerns about road safety and misuse of public infrastructure.
