Anti-narcotics activist Gumin Maize has been charged under the Pokcho Act.


A fresh case has been registered at the Itanagar Mahila Police Station against Arunachal Pradesh anti-narcotics activist Gumin Meez and two of his associates. The case was registered under several sections of the Prevention of Sexual Abuse of Children (POCCHO) Act and the recently introduced Indian Justice Code (BNS) based on a complaint filed by a seventeen-year-old girl.

According to the police, The case has been registered at Itanagar Mahila Police Station under Section 53/26 of the Indian Penal Code., 75(2), 79, 127(2) and 351(2) as well as Sections 8 and 12 of the POCSO Act. Apart from the main accused Gumin Miz, Md Arunachal Pradesh’s anti-narcotics fightersTwo other people who identified themselves as members of the group were also named. The complainant is a seventeen-year-old girl, Therefore, the whole matter is covered under Child Protection and Prevention of Sexual Abuse Act.

Days before the new case was registered, Mize was arrested on charges of rape in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Superintendent of Police Pankaj Lamba of East Siang district, Mize was arrested by a team of Pasighat Mahila Police Station on June 18 as part of the investigation into the rape case. After his arrest, he was produced before a local court where he was sent to fourteen days judicial custody for further investigation.

The authorities are yet to reveal the precise nature of the complaint and the progress of the investigation in the newly filed POCSO case or issue an official statement on the situation surrounding the registration of the case. According to the police, Both cases are currently under investigation and more information is expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
