The newly approved authority will be responsible for the planning, financing and development of satellite cities in and around Guwahati within the jurisdiction of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). The initiative aims to support planned urban expansion, improve infrastructure and reduce developmental pressure on the state capital.

According to officials, the move is part of a long-term strategy to create sustainable urban centres around Guwahati while addressing recurring civic challenges.

Speaking to GPlus, a GMDA official said, “It is a pre-planned initiative to develop surrounding areas by improving public infrastructure and the overall ecosystem of these places so that issues such as garbage management, urban flooding, transportation bottlenecks and other civic problems can be addressed effectively.”

The official added, “Further details regarding the areas, revenue villages and circles that will be brought under the project will be announced at a later stage.”

The government expects the satellite city model to facilitate balanced regional growth, improve urban services and accommodate future population and economic expansion in the Guwahati metropolitan region.
