GUWAHATI: The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Monday announced two major initiatives aimed at strengthening India's film industry and accelerating the expansion of cinema infrastructure across the country.
As part of the reforms, the Ministry has constituted a high-level Study Group under the chairmanship of Prasoon Joshi to examine opportunities and challenges facing the Indian film industry. The group, comprising industry experts and technology partners, has been tasked with recommending measures to enhance the global competitiveness of Indian cinema and submit its report within three months.
The Study Group will evaluate the impact of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and virtual production on filmmaking and suggest ways to integrate these tools into the industry. It will also examine issues related to institutional financing, funding options for film production, and challenges faced by filmmakers in raising capital for production and distribution.
Additionally, the group will work with state governments and other stakeholders to identify best practices and recommend a comprehensive policy framework for the long-term growth of the Indian film sector.
In another significant move, the Ministry has prepared and circulated Model State Cinema Regulations to all state governments to streamline the process of establishing cinemas and theatres. Since cinema regulation falls under the State List, varying approval procedures across states have often slowed the development of cinema infrastructure, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas.
The model regulations, drafted after consultations with stakeholders, seek to standardise approval processes and facilitate faster establishment of cinema halls. The Ministry has urged states to adopt the framework and has offered assistance for its implementation.
According to the Ministry, the twin initiatives are expected to strengthen film production, improve access to finance, promote technological innovation, and create a more conducive regulatory environment, helping build a modern and globally competitive Indian film industry.
