GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, July 17, flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train from Jind railway station in Haryana.

The train will operate on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route and cover the distance in around two hours, with 12 intermediate stops.

The 10-coach train has been designed, engineered and integrated in India using indigenous technology. It can operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph and uses hydrogen fuel-cell technology to generate electricity onboard.

The technology produces water vapour as the only by-product, making the train a cleaner alternative to conventional fossil-fuel-powered trains.

“This milestone marks the latest chapter in the evolution of how Indian Railways has powered its trains—from coal and steam to cleaner, more sustainable sources of energy,” Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said earlier this week.

Calling the launch a major milestone, PM Modi said the hydrogen train represents a significant step towards clean and sustainable mobility.

With the launch, India has joined the select group of countries operating hydrogen-powered trains.
