The 72nd National Film Awards 2024 recognizes the best films of 2024 Assamese film ‘Juiful’ won the Rajat Kamal Award and ‘Article 370’ won the Best Feature Film Award.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the 72nd National Film Awards on July 18, with Aditya Suhas Jambhal’s ‘Article 370’ winning the Best Feature Film award and Yadumani Dutt’s ‘Zuiful’ winning the Best Assamese Film Award.
‘Zuiful’, which won the Best Assamese Film award, tells the story of two mothers in a conflict-torn area on the Assam-Nagaland border. The film perfectly captures the daily life struggles of the villagers in this area, where the only rules are rest during the day and guarding at night. The film will receive the Rajat Kamal Award and a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh. Edmond Ranson also won the best cinematography award for ‘Life in Loom’, a documentary on the life struggles of traditional weavers.
Among the major national awards, Yami Gautam won the Best Actress award for her performance in ‘Article 370’, set in the backdrop of Jammu and Kashmir. Mammootty won the Best Actor Award for ‘Bhram Yugam’ and Karthik Aaryan won the Best Actor Award for ‘Chandu Champion’ Randeep Hooda won the Best Debut Director Award for Swadhani Veer Savarkar and Srikanth won the Best Hindi Film Award based on the life of entrepreneur Srikanth Bolla. Sanjay Mishra (Eater) won the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Sachna Namidas (Maharaj) and Rupshree Bharkadi (Mithya) won the award for Best Actress. The best background singer award went to Abhay Jodhpurkar and the singer award went to Vaikom Vijayalakshmi. Shehnad Jalal won the award for Best Cinematography (Bhramyugam) and Bandreddy Sukumar won the award for Best Screenplay (Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2).
In regional language film category, Anjan Dutt’s ‘Chilachchitra Ek’ won Best Bengali Film, Abhishek Jain’s ‘Maran’ Best Gujarati Film, Suman Bhatt’s ‘Mithya’ Best Kannada Film and Fazil Mohammed’s ‘Feminisi Fatima’ won Best Malayalam Film. Dhanush’s Rayan won the Best Tamil Film, Yadu Vanshi’s Komiti Kurollu won the Best Telugu Film, Amartya Bhattacharya’s Lahari won the Best Odia Film, Paresh Mokachi’s Mukkam Post Bombilwari won the Best Marathi Film, Dholi won the Best Garhwali Film and Imbu won the Best Tulu Film. Bhangar was also nominated for Best Non-Story Film and Ram-Nami for Best Documentary. Popular films like Kalki 2898 AD, Amaran, Bhul Bhulaiya 3 and Stree 2 also won awards in various categories reflecting the diversity of Indian cinema.
These outstanding films and artistes, selected from the films certified by the Censor Board in 2024, will be presented with awards and certificates by the Central Government at a formal function at a later date. This year’s awards have once again firmly established the growing popularity and artistic excellence of Indian mainstream films as well as regional films on the country’s national stage.
