According to an official notification issued on June 11, schools have been instructed to ensure that the weight of school bags does not exceed prescribed limits. The maximum permissible weight has been fixed at 1.5 kg for Classes I and II, 2–3 kg for Classes III to V, 4 kg for Classes VI and VII, 4.5 kg for Classes VIII and IX, and 5 kg for Class X.
The notification also directs schools to inform students in advance about the books required each day, ensure that students carry textbooks as per the daily timetable, and advise parents to purchase lightweight school bags with broad padded straps.
Schools have further been asked to counsel students, parents and teachers on health issues arising from heavy school bags and avoid prescribing additional textbooks, guidebooks or reference materials beyond those authorised by NCERT.
Heads of institutions have been directed to ensure strict compliance and maintain proper records of implementation. District-level inspection teams will conduct regular checks, and any violation of the guidelines may invite appropriate action against the defaulting institution.
The order has been marked as “Most Urgent” and circulated to all schools under Kamrup Metropolitan District for immediate compliance.
