The Olympic medallist from Baro Mukhia village in Golaghat district secured the silver medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games and used the occasion to express solidarity with the people of her home state.
“I want to dedicate this medal to the many people who lost their lives in the floods. During those difficult times, I wasn’t there. I couldn’t focus properly because my people were in such a dire situation. Seeing the people of my own district in that state made me feel terrible, so I want to dedicate this to the people of Assam,” Lovlina said.
Earlier, on July 28, Lovlina had appealed for support for the flood-hit state through a post on X.
“People of Assam are badly affected by the flood situation in the state. I would like to appeal to every fellow Indian to kindly come forward and help us. I am currently participating in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but my heart is with my people and my state,” she wrote.
Lovlina's latest medal adds another milestone to her decorated career while further strengthening Assam's reputation as a leading contributor to Indian boxing. Her gesture has also been widely appreciated for drawing attention to the plight of flood-affected communities.
The floods that struck Upper Assam on July 19 severely impacted districts including Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, leaving lakhs of people affected and causing widespread destruction to homes, crops and infrastructure.
According to the latest Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report, the flood-related death toll in the state has risen to 82.
