GUWAHATI: A GST intelligence and enforcement unit has arrested Mukesh Jalan, proprietor and director of Sadguru Engineers & Allied Services Private Limited, in Guwahati over alleged major tax irregularities and evasion amounting to nearly ₹13 crore.

Jalan was arrested on Thursday, May 28, from his office located at Hanuman Tower in Guwahati’s Athgaon area, and was produced before a court in Guwahati on Friday, May 29. The court subsequently remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody, an official told GPlus.
Sadguru Engineers & Allied Services Private Limited is a Class-I government works contractor engaged in executing projects allotted by agencies such as the PWD and NHIDCL.
The firm was primarily involved in the four-laning project of National Highway 37 from Jorhat to Jhanji, a project estimated to be worth ₹258 crore.
Officials investigating the case said multiple discrepancies were detected in the GST profile of the taxpayer. These include alleged short payment of tax, fake availment of Input Tax Credit (ITC), excess ITC claims, and claims of ineligible ITC, among others.
The investigation team is currently verifying documents, bank statements, audit reports, and online financial data linked to the firm.
Officials further stated that several firms associated with Jalan have been traced across different parts of the country. An official also claimed that Jalan had previously been arrested by Jorhat Police in another case.
