In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said there was no wrongdoing in determining the caste of citizens as part of the nationwide census process by the current government. The court dismissed the plea, noting that the matter fell entirely within the jurisdiction of the government’s policy.
The Cabinet Political Affairs Committee in a meeting in April last year decided to include caste-based enumeration in the 2027 census. Since then, this caste-based enumeration has become a major feature of the 2027 census. Till the 2011 census, the process included systematic enumeration of SCs and STs only. The government has already informed Parliament that the second phase of the 2027 census will include caste-based census.‘b.
