More than 15.43 lakh people are currently registered as active job seekers in Assam, the state government officially said in July in response to a question raised by MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Skills, Employment and Industries Minister Prashant Phukon said a total of 15,43,350 job seekers have registered, till June, in the Directorate of Public Employment, Directorate of Employment. The data released in the House reveals the true picture of unemployment and employment in the state.
The minister said that the number of registered job seekers in the state as on March 31, 2016 was 15,82,987 and the department has been maintaining annual registration data regularly since then. According to statistics, the number of registered job seekers in 2022 was 11,53,971 and 10,34,613 new job seekers were registered that year. Similarly, the total number of registrations increased to 20,10,517 in 2023, of which 8,56,546 were newly registered. In 2024, the number increased again to 21,16,561 and the number of new registrations in that year was 1,06,0 Next year, in 2025, the number of actively registered job seekers was 11,88,160 and 2,49,765 new registrations.
As on June 30, 2026, the department registered 15,43,350 registered job seekers and 3,55,741 new job seekers during this period. In parallel, the government informed the House that a total of 12,52,731 job seekers have expired or had their registration canceled till June 30.
Giving details of the educational qualifications of the registered job seekers, the minister said the highest registration was seen among graduates. Currently, 6,48,899 graduates and 1,16,159 postgraduates are registered as job seekers in the state. It has 62,581 technical diploma holders and 65,989 technical graduates on the register, representing a large chunk of highly qualified youth for employment in the state.
The government presented the information in the Assembly in response to a question on the annual details of the unemployed registered with the state’s employment department and the educational qualifications of the job seekers. It remains to be seen what steps the authorities take to create jobs in the future based on the current state of the employment system and the unemployment problem in the state.
