After 26 days, social activist Sonam Wangchuk finally broke her fast on Thursday night. Union Minister JP Nadda went to a private hospital in Delhi and fed Sonam with his own hands. Another Union Minister Jitendra Singh was also present at the hospital at that time. After breaking the fast, social activist Sonam Wangchuk thanked the Union Minister and the entire country.
Holding the hand of Union Minister Nadda, Sonam said she was very thankful and happy to break the fast. He then thanked his wife Gitanjali who was standing next to him. Sonam said a total of 65 MPs from various political parties had sent written requests to her asking her to call off her hunger strike before meeting the two Union ministers. Considering the current situation of the country and various important issues, he decided to end the hunger strike.
Note that, Sonam had started a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on June 26, demanding answers to the leaked NET exam question papers and reforms in the country’s education system. Gradually the movement turned into massive protests in the capital. Also, a bill has been drafted to set up speedy trial courts and provide for stiffer penalties for speedy trial of cases. After discussing the bill in the cabinet meeting, the government has assured that all efforts will be made to pass it in the upcoming session of Parliament.
