The first edition of the Assam Premier League (APL) will be held in August this year, marking a glorious chapter for the cricketing world of Assam. The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has already intensified preparations for the mega tournament with the aim of providing a professional and competitive platform to the talented cricketers of Assam.
BCCI Secretary Debjit Shaikia confirmed the league on Monday. All the matches of the tournament will be played at Barshapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati with a total of 33 matches. There is huge enthusiasm among players for the league and four thousand players have already registered. However, only 150 players will get the final opportunity to participate in the APL through the auction process which ends in July.
Shaikia added that the tournament is very important for the cricketers of the state as the matches will be telecasted in prime time on national television. It will be a golden opportunity for Assam players to showcase their talent to the entire country and directly attract the attention of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises and talent scouts. He hoped that the league would help more players from Assam get a chance in the IPL, which would simultaneously contribute to the development of Assam cricket and enhance the individual skills of the players.
ACA president Tarang Gogoi officially announced the start of the Assam Premier League in October 2025 via social media, calling it “a glorious chapter in the journey of Assam cricket”. In the announcement, Gogoi said that Rajdeep Ojha was named the Chairman of the APL Governing Council at the inaugural meeting of the league.
The proposed league will give cricketers from the state an opportunity to compete in a high level professional environment and further strengthen Assam’s presence in the national cricketing environment.
