The court has issued a notice to Delhi Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma

A Delhi court has issued notice to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma for his controversial remarks on ‘Miya Muslim’ The notice was issued on a petition filed by social activist Harsh Manda demanding registration of a case against the chief minister.

Additional Satra judge Sanu Agnihotri took the action after hearing a review petition filed by Manda.

Earlier, on April 20, a magistrate court refused to direct the police to register a complaint in the matter.

The petition stated that the Chief Minister had made these comments at a public meeting held at Digboi in Tinsukia district in January when he spoke about deleting the names of around 400,000 to 500,000 ‘Miya voters’ during a special short revision of Assam’s voter list.

The Chief Minister alleged that they will leave Assam if they face difficulties and arrangements have been made not to vote in Assam.

In the Satra court, Manda’s counsel argued that the lower court dismissed the petition for lack of jurisdiction. The lawyer referred to the concept of ‘Zero FIR’ and said information of any arrestable offense can be lodged at any police station, irrespective of where the offense is committed. The court issued a notice and fixed July 15 as the date of hearing.
