Security has been beefed up in the capital since Thursday morning amid the ongoing Janata Party (JP) agitation at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMC) has closed 16 metro stations indefinitely due to security concerns.
According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhamba Road, Supreme Court, Seva Tirtha, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jorbagh and Shivaji Stadium metro stations have been temporarily closed. This decision has caused inconvenience to many passengers.
The number of protestors in the ongoing movement at Jantar Mantar is increasing. Delhi Police and other security agencies have taken special measures to maintain law and order in view of the surge in crowds. Police have increased their presence in various important areas of the capital and are monitoring the situation round the clock.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said in a statement that the move was taken for security reasons. No specific time frame for when the stations will be closed has yet been announced. A decision will be taken to resume metro services once the situation normalizes.
This has started to affect public life in Delhi as the presence of protestors increased at the protest sites. Security agencies have urged citizens not to go to crowded areas unnecessarily.
