Assam Cabinet Approves New Child Protection Policy and Juvenile Justice Rules

The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday, August 18, approved the Assam State Child Protection Policy, 2026, aimed at strengthening the safety, security, dignity and well-being of children across the state.

The Cabinet meeting was held at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur.

The policy has been approved as part of the state government’s commitment to ensuring effective implementation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and the POCSO Rules, 2020.

According to the government, the policy will establish a uniform, state-wide child protection protocol across public and private entities involved in the care and protection of children.

The Cabinet also approved the draft Assam Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Rules, 2026.

The rules are aimed at ensuring effective implementation of the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, as amended, in Assam.

The two measures are expected to strengthen the state’s institutional framework for child protection and ensure greater consistency in the implementation of laws concerning children.
