GUWAHATI: The All Assam Motor Transport Association (AAMTA) has formally appealed to the Assam State Transport Authority to revise passenger bus fares across the state, citing a sharp rise in fuel prices and inflation since the last fare revision more than six years ago.

In a memorandum submitted to the Secretary of the Assam State Transport Authority on June 2, the transport body said that commercial vehicle operators are facing severe financial pressure due to escalating operational costs, making it increasingly difficult to sustain operations under the existing fare structure.
According to the association, the last bus fare revision was implemented in November 2019 through a notification issued by the Transport Department. At that time, the price of diesel stood at around ₹63 per litre. However, diesel prices have increased substantially over the years, while the cost of vehicle maintenance, spare parts, labour and other essential services has also risen significantly.
The association noted that despite repeated increases in fuel prices and inflationary pressures, passenger fares have remained unchanged since 2019. It argued that the cumulative rise in the fuel price index and overall operating expenses has severely impacted the viability of the passenger transport sector.
AAMTA further stated that many operators are struggling to meet day-to-day expenses, with some reportedly finding it difficult to continue operations. The association warned that if the current situation persists, it could adversely affect public transport services across Assam.
The association urged the State Transport Authority to consider a 70 per cent increase in passenger bus fares to help operators cope with the rising costs. It maintained that the proposed revision is necessary to ensure the continued functioning of the state's transport network and to safeguard the livelihoods of those dependent on the sector.
