GUWAHATI: An auto-rickshaw driver has been arrested on charges of allegedly abducting a young woman and attempting to sexually assault her in Guwahati, police confirmed on Thursday, June 11.
The accused, identified as Monowar Hussain, was taken into custody following a complaint lodged by the victim. Law enforcement authorities have also seized the auto-rickshaw which was allegedly used during the incident.
According to preliminary investigations, the woman had boarded the auto-rickshaw near the Downtown area on Sunday night to travel to her destination. However, instead of following the designated route, the driver allegedly diverted the vehicle and took her to an isolated location.
The accused then allegedly tried to sexually assault the woman. During the incident, her mobile phone was reportedly damaged. Despite the ordeal, the woman managed to resist the attack and escape from the spot before seeking help.
Based on the FIR filed by the woman, the police launched an investigation that led to the arrest of the accused.
Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
