A youth was arrested in Pathshala on charges of impersonation and forgery as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer.
The name of the deceased is Lakshman Barua of Pathshala Haripur. He allegedly created fake CBI identity cards on the computer and posed as a senior investigating officer.
He used fake identities to influence people and also claimed to have his hands in government offices.
Investigators said the accused claimed that they were able to secure jobs in departments such as the Education Department, Assam Police and Navodaya School. Several fake employment papers were recovered from his mobile phone.
The officers also recovered the forged signatures of senior officers including the Director General of Police of Assam and heads of various departments.
Authorities have also recovered a seal printed on the stamp paper allegedly belonging to Patacharkusi Revenue Circle Officer.
The accused are said to have approached members of an illegal arms network to buy the pistol for Rs 80,000.
The incident came to light after a woman’s family filed a complaint that the accused was planning to marry her. The victim’s family said he had already married twice and was preparing for a third marriage.
After the complaint, he was arrested by members of the Hindu organization in Pathshala. A preliminary investigation revealed other allegations of fraud.
Also, Barua used to run a private school called Srijan Academy in Pathshala which is said to be closed now.
A check book and a check of Rs 5 lakh were also recovered.
Members of the Bajrang team said that the accused tried to resolve the issue by giving a check of Rs 5 lakh on the spot.
Police are continuing to investigate the case.
