On Thursday, July 30, a horrific incident took place at the Plastic Surgery Department of Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Four patients were injured when part of the hospital’s roof suddenly collapsed. The incident spread panic among the patients and employees of the hospital.
According to initial reports, a part of the roof suddenly collapsed on the patients undergoing treatment inside the ward. This created an uproar in the entire department. However, the hospital staff rushed there immediately to help the distressed. Hospital authorities provided immediate treatment to the injured patients and they are now in stable condition, officials said.
The ceiling of the plastic surgery department was in disrepair for a long time. The accident is believed to have occurred due to lack of timely repairs and proper maintenance. There are many concerns about the infrastructure of one of the major public health service institutions in Assam. The exact cause of the ceiling collapse and whether there will be a formal investigation are yet to be known.
