GUWAHATI: The footpaths along the GNB road from Guwahati’s Club towards Silpukhuri are in a severely dilapidated condition, leaving pedestrians struggling to navigate the stretch safely. With several educational institutions and other establishments located in the area, the condition of the footpaths has become an added concern, particularly for school-going children and daily commuters.

Speaking with GPlus, a local resident said the uneven and damaged surface makes walking extremely difficult.
“If we step on the footpath, it just moves, and it feels like we will fall on the ground. I am a resident of the nearby area and travel through this stretch every day. Day by day, the condition is only getting worse. I often avoid the footpath and walk on the main road. I have also seen many others doing the same,” she said.
She further pointed out that footpaths are meant to provide pedestrians with a safe space to walk, but their current condition is forcing people to use the road instead.
The presence of several schools and other institutions along and around the stretch has further intensified concerns, as a large number of students, staff and commuters use the road on a daily basis.
A school-going child also expressed fear while walking through the stretch.
“I am also scared while walking this way. Although the footpaths are in such a condition, there are still people who ride their bikes over them,” the child said.
Residents said the encroachment and use of footpaths by two-wheelers further worsen the situation, leaving pedestrians with limited space to walk safely.
Speaking with GPlus, the councillor of Ward 33 said that he has been continuously working towards the development of the area and expressed surprise over the complaints.
“I am continuously working for the development of the area. I do not know why there are such complaints. I will continue working on this issue as well,” the councillor said.
Residents have urged the authorities to inspect the stretch and take immediate steps to repair the damaged footpaths and ensure that they remain accessible to pedestrians, especially school children and other vulnerable road users.
