Japanese Prime Minister Sane Takaichi’s upcoming visit to Guwahati has been cancelled. The annual conference of India and Japan was scheduled to be held in Assam’s capital Guwahati from July 1 to 3. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made full preparations to welcome the Japanese Prime Minister here but the visit had to be canceled due to various logistical reasons, sources said. The conference is likely to be held in the country’s capital, New Delhi, on the same date.
Sources said the Japanese Prime Minister’s visit to India was cut short due to various urgent domestic commitments, including the current session of his country’s parliament. Besides, it has been decided to hold the meeting in Delhi because of the additional arrangements and time required to hold such a large conference outside the capital. However, the transfer will help smooth certain programs to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. This is Takaichi’s first visit to India as Prime Minister‘B. Initially, Guwahati was proposed to Japan as a possible venue for the conference in addition to New Delhi.
Earlier, in 2019, the then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was scheduled to visit Guwahati and was expected to be welcomed here by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the tour had to be canceled at the last minute due to the ongoing protests and agitation against the Citizenship Amendment Act in Assam.
A large delegation of top officials from more than 50 Japanese institutions will accompany the Japanese Prime Minister on the visit. Important agreements on various investment and supply chain issues are expected to be signed between the two countries during the visit. Also, several agreements are expected to be signed between the two countries in key sectors like semiconductors, renewable energy, defense sector, primary minerals and automotive industry.
According to Japanese media reports, the delegation will include Toshihiro Suzuki, president of the world-renowned automobile manufacturer Suzuki Motor. Earlier last MayDuring the Japanese Foreign Minister’s visit to Delhi last month, Japan expressed its desire to enhance the capacity of India’s energy sector. To this end, Japan can help strengthen India’s strategic reserves through their ASEAN Energy Management Fund and the $2 billion Southeast Asia Investment Finance Mechanism. During Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Japan in August 2025, Japan pledged 10 trillion yen in private investment in India over the next 10 years.
