No Child Rescued Yet in Alleged Child Labour Case at GMCH, Joint Investigation Underway


 

GUWAHATI: No child has been rescued or recovered so far in the alleged child labour case at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), even as authorities continue their investigation into the matter.

The controversy erupted after members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) claimed to have found two minors engaged in garbage collection work on the hospital premises. The allegations surfaced after videos from the site circulated on local media, prompting authorities to begin a verification process.

Speaking to GPlus, the Project Coordinator at the Child Helpline under the District Child Protection Unit, Kamrup (Metro), said a joint follow-up is being conducted by officials from the Labour Department, the Child Helpline team, and the NGO Child Friendly Guwahati.

He stated that no children have been traced or recovered in connection with the allegations so far, and the investigation is still underway to ascertain the facts and verify the claims.

Meanwhile, Speaking to the media, GMCH Superintendent Dr. Devajit Choudhury has rejected allegations related to biomedical waste handling. He assured that a detailed internal inquiry has been initiated into the reported child labour issue.
