Dimple Yadav, wife of Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, was arrested by the Delhi Police on Monday. Kakaroch Janata Party (KJP) is protesting against the leak of question papers by the government. Dimple Yadav and several other party leaders were arrested on their way from Sangsad Bhavan to Jantar Mantar in support of the protest led by Abhijit Deepak.
“The arrest of MP Dimple Yadav and other leaders who spoke up for students and youth in Delhi is strongly condemned. The lathi-charge on students is completely undemocratic,” the Samajwadi Party said in an ex.
MPs led by Dimple Yadav raised slogans against the central government on the streets of Delhi. “Today’s youth wants to talk about their problems, but the government doesn’t want to listen. Even when people are on hunger strike, the government is silent. This is putting a lot of pressure on the students,” said Dimple Yadav.
Hours earlier, police used tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters marching from Jantar Mantar to Parliament House. In the incident, people from both sides were injured and mobile internet services were stopped for a while in the area. Gatherings of more than five people were banned in Delhi on Monday, police said.
Abhijit Deepak formed ‘Kakroch Janata Party’ in May after the Supreme Court Chief Justice’s comments and it gained massive popularity on social media. Deepak, who was in the US, came to India in June and started protesting against the question paper leak. Prominent social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who started a fast at Jantar Mantar on June 28, was hospitalized on Saturday after her health deteriorated.
Wangchuk has made it clear that he will end his hunger strike only if the government accepts responsibility for the question paper leak or if MPs promise to raise the matter in parliament. All eyes are now on the release of detained leaders including Dimple Yadav and subsequent events. The government has not yet issued an official response on the matter.
