Sonam Wangchuk Backs Cockroach Janta Party Protest; Demands Accountability Over NEET, CBSE Rows

GUWAHATI: Climate activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk has announced his support for the Cockroach Janta Party’s planned protest in Delhi on June 6, stating that he will join the demonstration if no action is taken by June 5 on the group's demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Taking to social media platform X and Instagram on Tuesday, Wangchuk said the ongoing concerns surrounding India's education system demand accountability at the highest level.

“I will be joining the CJP members in Delhi on 6th June if nothing changes by 5th June. Any self-respecting minister should resign if things go so wrong… Not to mention the effect on millions of young lives and, in fact, the future of India,” Wangchuk wrote.

The announcement comes shortly after Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke hinted that a prominent public figure would extend support to the movement. Ahead of Wangchuk’s statement, Dipke posted “The wait is over” on X, while the party’s backup account, ‘Cockroach Is Back’, teased a “big announcement”.

In a video message explaining his decision, Wangchuk said he had spoken directly with Dipke and reviewed data shared by him regarding the movement. According to Wangchuk, his discussions with the party founder convinced him that the campaign reflects genuine concerns among India's youth rather than any external agenda.

He said Dipke appeared committed to addressing systemic issues in the country and described his efforts as a sacrifice aimed at bringing about positive change.

Wangchuk further noted that the debate extends beyond controversies surrounding examinations such as NEET, CUET and CBSE assessments. He argued that the situation points to broader structural challenges within the education sector, an area in which he has worked for decades.

Expressing disappointment over the pace of reforms, Wangchuk said the concerns raised by students and young people deserve serious attention, adding that the future of the country depends on the quality and integrity of its education system.
