A third year B.Tech student died after falling from an academic building at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati on Sunday afternoon. Police initially suspected the incident to be suicide, but the exact cause of death will be known only after receiving the investigation and post-mortem report.
This incident happened around 2.30 pm on Sunday. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased has been identified as Ritesh Raj Singh, a third-year student of the institute’s Computer Science and Engineering Department. Ritesh, a resident of Brahmaputra Hostel, is believed to have jumped from the fifth floor of the academic building. Sources said Ritesh was a brilliant student and had an academic record. He recently managed to secure an internship at Goldman Sachs, one of the world’s leading investment banking firms.
IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal sent an email to all members of the institute expressing his deepest condolences to the bereaved family. The director said in the email that he was saddened to learn of the untimely death of Ritesh Raj Singh, a third-year student of Computer Science and Engineering and a resident of Brahmaputra Hostel. This is a deep loss to the IIT Guwahati family. The institute is in constant touch with his family and providing all necessary support during this difficult time, he said.

If the investigation proves that the incident was a suicide, it will be the first student suicide at IIT Guwahati in 2024 when four students committed suicide at the institute, sparking widespread concern and discussion about students’ mental health, academic stress and safety on campus.
