A severe heat wave is going on in Delhi. Tuesday, May 19, was the hottest May day recorded in Delhi in the last two years. According to the India Meteorological Department, temperatures at all major weather stations in Delhi have gone above 45 degrees Celsius. Safdarjung meteorological station recorded a maximum temperature of 45.1 degrees Celsius, breaking all previous records. Earlier, on Monday, May 18, the temperature was 43.4 degrees Celsius, but rose rapidly in just 24 hours.
The ridge area recorded a maximum temperature of 46.5 degrees Celsius, which was the hottest place in the capital. Palam and Safdarjung recorded 45.1 degrees Celsius, Lodhi Road 45.2 degrees Celsius and Ayanagar 45.5 degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature is much higher than normal. Lodhi Road recorded 6.2 degrees above normal and Safdarjung 4.7 degrees above normal. Along with intense heat during the day, people are not getting relief due to dryness of the air and lack of rain at night. The night temperature was also 27 to 28.2 degrees Celsius.
Apart from heat, air pollution in Delhi is also a big problem for people. On Tuesday, the air quality index, or AQI, in Delhi and surrounding areas rose to 208, which is classified as bad or worse. To this end, the Air Quality Management Commission issued the first phase of GRAPs, or Graded Response Action Plans, across the region. According to the Meteorological Department, pollution and heat levels are expected to continue in the coming days, which may cause severe headaches and health problems among people.
