The US and Iran held peace talks in Switzerland on Sunday, brokered by Pakistan and Qatar. The first meeting has been held. But how positive it was is already being questioned. According to several media sources, the Iranian delegation left the meeting after 80 minutes due to threats from US President Donald Trump. Pakistan is also shocked by the incident.
A few days ago, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding to restore lasting peace in West Asia. However, representatives of the two countries met face-to-face on Sunday at a resort in Bergenst, Switzerland, to implement and review the terms of the 14-point agreement.
The US delegation was led by US Vice President JD Vance. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led the Iranian delegation.
Sources said the first 80 minutes of talks ended amicably. But then there is a pause. The two sides were scheduled to meet again after the break. But in the meantime, the US president has threatened Tehran by raising the issue of Lebanon. “If Iran-backed Hezbollah and other groups in Lebanon do not stop the unrest, Iran will be attacked again. And this attack will be bigger and stronger than before,” he said.
After Trump’s attack, Iranian representatives left the meeting in anger. However, the peace meeting was not canceled completely. The two sides will meet again on Monday.
The meeting was highly significant in the context of recent clashes. US Vice President Vance met with Iranian representatives and claimed that significant progress was made in various areas during the meeting. However, differences remain on issues like Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz. Not only that, he also gave Trump’s message. “Washington is ready to improve relations with Tehran as negotiations progress through diplomacy. A meaningful diplomatic deal requires compromise and sustained efforts,” he said.
The MoU was signed with 14 conditions for Iran-US peace. Most notably, wars in Iran, Lebanon, and the rest of the Middle East would cease. Israel and the United States will guarantee that there will be no new war. The United States will lift the siege of Hormuz. Iran will also open Hormuz. Sanctions on Iranian ships will also be lifted.
The $24 million seized by Iran will be returned. Sanctions on Iran will be lifted. Iran will withdraw its troops from the surrounding area within 30 days. And most importantly, Iran does not develop nuclear weapons. Discussions will continue on the future of 60 percent enriched uranium.
