The US military attacked a merchant ship near Oman on Monday. There were 24 Indian sailors on board. However, they were not injured in this incident. The US has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Madagascar-flagged merchant vessel is MT MARIVEX. The vessel was en route from Karwar in Karnataka to Dukam in Oman. The ship was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman on Monday afternoon. The US military opened fire on the ship. The ship caught fire in the middle of the sea. All Indian sailors on board were rescued and taken to safety.
US Central Command issued a statement within 24 hours of the incident. “Due to the current war situation, a naval blockade has been imposed on Hormuz,” the statement said. However, the ship defied US military orders and headed for Iran. The merchant ship was fired from the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln. The U.S. military also said that since the blockade began in April it has disabled seven violating ships, diverted 134 loyalist ships and allowed 42 humanitarian ships to safety.
