The recognition was granted by the Geographical Indications Registry under the Government of India and is expected to provide legal protection to the products while enhancing their marketability across domestic and international markets.

The newly GI-tagged products reflect Assam's rich traditional knowledge and craftsmanship. They include tribal handloom traditions from Karbi Anglong and the Deuri community, bamboo-based artisanal products, and the Bihu Pepa, the iconic musical instrument closely associated with Assam's most celebrated festival.

The GI registration process was facilitated with support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), which has been assisting local communities in obtaining recognition for region-specific products.

With the latest additions, Assam further expands its portfolio of GI-certified products, reinforcing efforts to preserve traditional skills, promote cultural identity, and create greater economic opportunities for artisans, weavers and craft practitioners across the state.
