The flood situation in Assam is becoming more critical. According to official data, 10 more people died in the last 24 hours, bringing the current death toll to over 640,000 people affected by the floods in 11 districts of the state, official sources said.
According to the latest official data, the new deaths include three from Sibsagar district, three from Jorhat, two from Charideo, one from Dhemaji and one from Karbi Anglong district. Floods are currently affecting Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Charideo, Kamrup, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Dhemaji, Hojai, Kamrup (metro) and Sibsagar districts. A total of 6,40,129 people in 939 villages under 40 residential areas of these 11 districts have been affected by the floods.
Natural calamities have also severely damaged the agricultural sector of the state. According to government sources, 24,897.27 hectares of agricultural land is still under flood. In parallel, urban or artificial floods disrupted public life in four districts of the state namely Kamrup, Darang, Kamrup (Metro) and Dibrugarh respectively. Urban floods affected 958 people in 16 localities or municipal wards under six revenue circles. The affected areas include 11 in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, two in Kamrup, two in Dibrugarh and one in Darang district.
