GUWAHATI: Civic authorities in Guwahati have begun removing roadside vendors and encroachments from key stretches of the city, including RG Baruah Road and Zoo Road, as part of a large-scale cleanup and beautification drive ahead of an upcoming visit by a delegation from Japan.
On Wednesday, June 17, personnel of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), assisted by other agencies, carried out eviction operations along footpaths occupied by street vendors in the two busy corridors. The move is aimed at clearing pedestrian pathways and improving the overall appearance of the city before the high-profile visit.
The eviction drive forms part of a broader effort by civic agencies to spruce up important locations across Guwahati. Authorities have reportedly intensified cleaning, landscaping and maintenance work in areas likely to be visited by the foreign delegation.
Officials said the ongoing exercise is intended to enhance the city's infrastructure and present a cleaner urban environment. Footpaths that had been occupied by temporary stalls and roadside vendors were cleared during the operation, allowing unhindered pedestrian movement.
The Japanese delegation is expected to visit Assam in the first week of July 1, prompting civic bodies to accelerate efforts to improve the city's appearance and public infrastructure.
