Speaking to GPlus, an Enforcement Inspector said the seizure drive began on July 8 and targets buses found violating the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
“Today, we seized around nine buses for violating the SOP. We keep these buses for seven days. After that, we hand over the cases to the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC), which then imposes the required punishment on the buses,” the official said.
The enforcement action follows repeated complaints against some green city bus drivers over alleged reckless driving, overspeeding, dangerous overtaking and other traffic violations.
The buses were seized after their operators were found allegedly breaching traffic regulations and provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act, raising concerns about the safety of passengers and other road users.
Most of the impounded buses have been parked at the Transport Department’s Betkuchi office, while some have been shifted to the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) due to limited parking space.
The department said the enforcement drive will continue, and commercial vehicles found repeatedly violating traffic rules or endangering public safety will face stringent action.
