According to the latest results of NIT 2026 released by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the number of candidates clearing the prestigious medical entrance exam from most of the northeastern states has dropped compared to the entire Northeast, with only Mizoram and Nagaland seeing an increase in the number of students who passed compared to last year.
According to the data, Assam has the highest number of students who have cleared the NIT exam among the entire Northeast. A total of 18,435 students from the state cleared the exam this year. However, the number is lower than the 19,809 candidates who passed this year out of a total of 43,187 registered candidates from Assam and 36,283 of them sat the exam.
Like Assam, the number of passed candidates in Arunachal Pradesh fell by 2,6 to 2,179 as 4,891 registered candidates and 3,940 candidates appeared in the examination in the state. The same decline was observed in Manipur. Out of 9,657 registered candidates in the state, 8,321 appeared for the exam and 5,070 passed. Last year 6 thousand 116 students passed from Manipur. In Meghalaya, the decline was slight but only 1,658 students passed this year as against 1,681 last year. There were 3,425 candidates in the state. Similarly, the number of successful candidates dropped from 2,265 to 1,807 in Tripura and 643 in Sikkim.
In contrast, Mizoram has shown a positive trend. 1,353 candidates have cleared the exam this year compared to 1,243 last year. Similarly, in Nagaland, 1,946 students successfully cleared the exam as against 1,813 last year. According to national statistics, a total of 22,79,743 candidates registered for NEET (UG), out of which 19,99,895 candidates appeared for the examination and a total of 11,21,185 candidates passed the exam across the country.
National Examinations Agency (NEA) data shows that the North East is making a significant contribution to the country’s Bachelor of Medical Science entrance exams but the success rate of most states is declining this year.
