A video of the interaction between Modi and Borgohain was released by the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday, August 10. During the conversation, Modi jokingly asked Borgohain about the incident, saying, “Kya hua wo restaurant waale se jhagda kar rahi thi?”
Borgohain explained that she and other Indian athletes had gone to the restaurant to celebrate their success after the Commonwealth Games when she noticed the inaccurate depiction of India.
“It was a happy occasion, sir, and we were celebrating our success. But I noticed that the map was distorted, and I did not feel good about it. I politely pointed it out to them, and they have now corrected it as well,” she said.
Praising her awareness, Modi said it was significant that Borgohain noticed the issue at a time when she was celebrating her sporting achievement.
“The fact that you recognised the significance of that map while celebrating after the Games is something I truly appreciate. I can say honestly that the video was not ordinary. It will be remembered by people for a very long time.”
The incident had attracted attention after Borgohain noticed that the Northeast region was missing from a map of India displayed at the Glasgow restaurant. The boxer had objected to the depiction and the restaurant subsequently made the necessary changes.
Borgohain won the silver medal in the women’s 75kg boxing category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, marking her first medal at the Commonwealth Games. She had also served as one of India’s flag-bearers at the event alongside Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, with India finishing fourth in the overall medal standings.
