Center in Delhi on Thursday, A Crude Oil and Natural Gas Agreement was signed between the Government of Nagaland and Assam. In an event organized on this occasion, the Home Minister said that the security situation in the North-East has gradually improved. As a result, AFSPA has already been withdrawn from 80 percent of the North East. The law will be repealed from the remaining areas by next yearb. The home minister added that violence in the northeastern states has reduced significantly in the last few years. Areas where AFSPA is still in force, A detailed review of the security measures in those areas is underway. The government’s main aim is to completely withdraw AFSPA from the entire North East by next year.

The demand to withdraw the Army’s Special Powers or AFSPA from Northeast India is not new, It is very old. There are frequent allegations that the army has inflicted unspeakable torture on civilians in the name of security. Assam since 1990, The Center has designated most states in Northeast India, including Nagaland, as terrorist areas and has given it the right to exercise special powers. However, social activist Iram Sharmila Chanu had been agitating for a long time demanding the withdrawal of AFSPA, alleging atrocities against the army. This history is not unknown to anyone.

Presently the situation in Manipur is very dire. The state has been gripped by ethnic clashes for the past three years. Attacks have also taken place in several places in Manipur in recent days. There are also allegations of conspiracy to create fresh unrest in the area with the help of foreign forces and terrorist organizations.
