GUWAHATI: Hailakandi Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged gangrape and murder of a 15-year-old Class 10 student, with three suspects, including a 16-year-old juvenile, taken into custody in connection with the case.
According to a police report, the incident came to light on the night of August 1, when the victim's mother returned home after attending a function at a neighbour's house. She found her daughter lying unresponsive on the bed and immediately alerted local residents, who informed the police.
Considering the seriousness of the case, police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to carry out a detailed investigation. Based on preliminary evidence and findings, three accused persons, each below the age of 20, including a 16-year-old juvenile, were apprehended on August 3.
According to the media reports, the case has been registered at Katlicherra Police Station under Sections 65(1) and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, following an FIR lodged by the victim's mother.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage across Hailakandi, with several organisations condemning the crime and demanding a fast-track trial to ensure swift justice.
Protest marches were held in different parts of the district, while memoranda were submitted to the district administration, urging authorities to expedite the investigation and take stringent action against those responsible.
