Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu, Udhayanidhi Stalin, was arrested on Tuesday, August 4 over his alleged remarks against Chief Minister Vijay, triggering protests by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) workers across the state.
Police detained Udhayanidhi from his residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, around 11 AM along with several DMK cadres. He was later taken to Thanjavur for questioning in connection with a case registered over his speech at a protest meeting on the Cauvery water-sharing dispute.
The controversy stems from remarks made during his address on the Cauvery issue, where he allegedly made a sexually suggestive reference to Chief Minister Vijay’s friendship with a popular Tamil actor after the crowd began chanting the actor’s name. The comments drew criticism and led to the police action.
While being escorted by police, Udhayanidhi denied making the statements attributed to him, calling the arrest politically motivated. “I am being arrested for things I never said,” he said, accusing the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government of trying to divert attention from public issues. He said he would challenge the case through legal means.
